Public Folder Replication

(Reference Internal KB Article – 842273)

Information to be retrieved from the customer:

· Get the Domain topology (No of DC/GC in the site)

· Get the Exchange Server topology (Between what Exchange Servers is the PF Replication not working)

· Check for third party software, Anti-virus in use (If yes, is it Exchange aware)

Preliminary Questions to be asked:

· The number of exchange servers to which the replication is not taking place.

· The versions of the source and target servers’ along with their service packs.

· Recent changes made on the above servers.

· Is the Hierarchy / Content being replicated or not replicating at all?

· Public folder replication would not take place if mail-flow is not working. So, this should be checked at the beginning.

Troubleshooting Steps to be performed

1. Determine whether the public folder store has an e-mail address

2. Check to make sure we have the Replica on the Public folder. (ESM – AG – First AG – Folders – Public Folders --- properties --- Replication)

3. To check the Default SMTP Virtual Server for (Smart Host) if any.

(The email has been sent to team members for Checking Default SMTP Virtual Server Settings by Arun Mysore to set the default settings on Default SMTP Virtual Server)

4. To check the Message tracking and then with diagnostics logging.

KB 246856 / KB 262162

Eg: Incase if the message is getting stuck in Pending Submission, then it is always the third party software which will be causing the problem. Also for other queues please refer related kb articles in VKB.

5. Increase diagnostics logging on public folder replication messages

6. Determine whether the replication messages that are sent from one computer are received by another computer

7. Determine whether only new or modified public folder information is replicated successfully

Event ID: 3018: This event is logged on the computer where the hierarchy change was made

3028: This event is logged on the computer that receives the outbound replication message

How to send replication status request messages in Exchange 2000 Server KB 321082

3024: This event is logged on the computer that receives the backfill request message

3017: This event is logged on the computer that sends the status replication message

3027: This event is logged on the computer that receives the status replication message

Try dismounting and re-mouting the public folder store to check if the event ids are being generated.

  1. Hi friends,

Public folders are widely used in on-premise's exchange environments. Public folder replication process works through the use of the exchange Information store service and Active Directory. I would like to tell you that you have given me much knowledge about it. Thanks for everything.
